David Suzuki Endorses Elizabeth May

“I have long admired voters in the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding for their election of Green Party leader, Elizabeth May. Aside from her powerful voice on behalf of the environment, she recognizes that issues of hunger and poverty, housing, social justice and UNDRIP must be resolved if we are to achieve a sustainable future. That’s why she constantly reaches across the aisle and tries to work with MPs from other parties because real solutions must transcend partisanship. It has been a difficult slog for the best politician in Ottawa. Voting for Elizabeth May is not only the best way to keep Poilievre from power, it will maintain the most important voice in Parliament.”

Did the Truth Slip Out?

Letter to the Editor, printed April 8 in Driftwood

Danielle Smith, Alberta’s conservative premier, has a special relationship with Donald Trump.  She also has a strong desire that Pierre Poilievre, federal conservative leader, wins the election.  The Trump, Smith and Poilievre team.  Trump mislead the Americans in his election campaign. He is raising the cost of living while gutting government services, protections and civil rights.

Is it beyond anyone’s imagination that Poilievre with a majority government will assist Trump in any way possible?  I would not be surprised if Trump and Poilievre would want Canada not as the 51st state but as a United States territory.  That way Canada would not have any congress members or senators.  Trump would not take a chance that we would elect anyone other than his obedient Republicans.

In Saanich-Gulf Islands, we have basically a two party contest to be our Member of Parliament….Conservative Cathie Ounsted, a Poilievre supporter, or Elizabeth May who has demonstrated daily that she is a consensus builder and a fighter for democracy.  Elizabeth May will always protect Canada.

To prove my point, I went to both Ounsted’s and Elizabeth May’s. campaign websites.  Ounsted says not one single word about her ideas or her party’s platform.  May clearly details her ideas and platform.

I want to maintain Canadian values and dignity, I am voting to re-elect Elizabeth May.

– Curt Firestone, Salt Spring Island

Sonia Furstenau: In a time of division, Elizabeth May shows us what leadership looks

There are moments in history when one voice speaks out while others hesitate – and that voice changes everything.

When Donald Trump began threatening tariffs and annexation, undermining international relationships and fanning the flames of division, most leaders stayed silent. But Elizabeth May did not.

She was the first to speak up. She named the danger when others were still calling it a distraction. She acted – not because it was popular, but because it was necessary. That’s what principled leadership looks like. And that’s exactly what we need right now in Canada.

Leadership grounded in principle, not polling

Elizabeth has always been a voice of clarity in moments of confusion. When others have chosen political safety, she’s chosen courage. When others have followed the path of least resistance, she’s walked forward – sometimes alone – because her compass is set by values, not convenience.

We see more and more political discourse in Canada drifting toward anger and division. That’s not who we are. It’s not who we want to be. We need leaders who resist that drift. Leaders who understand that how we treat each other, how we care for this planet, and how we govern should always be rooted in respect, compassion, and justice. Elizabeth brings just that to Parliament. In Saanich–Gulf Islands, a vote for Elizabeth May is not a symbolic gesture. It’s a powerful choice to keep an experienced, deeply trusted voice in Ottawa.

A voice that holds governments accountable, regardless of which party is in power, and that puts the well-being of people and our natural world at the centre of every decision.

The Liberals do not need this riding to form government. But Canada needs Elizabeth. If progressives split their vote here, the risk isn’t just a political shift, it’s the loss of a leader who has consistently stood for what’s right, even when it’s hard.

A Green MP who delivers

Elizabeth has been elected four times in Saanich–Gulf Islands because people know she works tirelessly for her constituents. She listens. She shows up. She acts. From climate action to housing, from protecting our coastlines to advancing healthcare and Indigenous
rights, Elizabeth doesn’t just raise the alarm, she brings forward solutions. She’s delivered concrete results in Saanich–Gulf Islands – securing tens of millions in federal investments for local infrastructure, housing, and environmental remediation.

From $40 million for Ocean Networks at UVic, to $16 million for the Keating overpass, to saving the Plant Health Centre and cleaning up toxic waste in Reay Creek, Elizabeth has delivered more federal dollars to the riding than even her predecessor, a Cabinet minister. In a time when trust in politics is low, Elizabeth is a rare leader who has earned the trust of people across party lines.

We are being asked to choose between fear and hope. Between more of the same – and something better. Elizabeth May has always offered something better. Not just resistance, but renewal. Not just critique, but clarity.

And that’s why I’m asking you to keep her voice in Parliament.

Because when things get tough, Elizabeth doesn’t sit back, she stands up. And in this moment, that kind of leadership isn’t just important. It’s essential.

Let’s choose integrity. Let’s choose experience.

Let’s choose leadership rooted in care for community and country.

Let’s choose Elizabeth May.

338: Polling vs. Modeling

With the federal election underway, some clarification is needed around 338Canada. To voters in Saanich-Gulf Islands — and anywhere — 338 specializes in electoral modeling — using existing polling data to make projections. While it is very insightful, it is not polling. They look at the national picture, then they use an algorithm to project and imagine, it’s not a polling company.

We do real polling. We hire real pollsters. The Green Party of Canada commissioned Oraclepoll to conduct a live telephone survey with a randomized sample of N=600 voting-age residents in Saanich—Gulf Islands, using both cellular and landline numbers. Interviews were conducted from March 21-25, 2025. The margin of error for the N=600 sample is +/- 4.0%.

At this point, with a statistically significant sample of the population in this riding, that I’m at 41%.

The Conservative is second. If you want the best possible member of Parliament who promises to work extremely hard for you, vote Green. Don’t be scared thinking that it’s a four-way race and it’s too close, Ignore 338. Because it’s not a poll. #votemay
